This is the personal website of Dr Jayanta Biswa Sarma (Jayanta B. Sarma). The site brings together my professional, research, writing, civic and other public activities.
I aim to collect as little personal information as reasonably necessary and to use it only for the purposes described below.
1. Information you provide
You may voluntarily provide personal information when you contact me through this website or by email.
This may include:
- your name;
- your email address;
- the contents of your message; and
- any other information you choose to provide.
This information will normally be used only to respond to your enquiry or correspondence.
Please do not send confidential medical information or information requiring urgent clinical attention through this website. This website does not provide a clinical consultation service.
2. Information collected automatically
Like most websites, this site may automatically receive limited technical information when you visit, such as:
- IP address;
- browser and device type;
- operating system;
- pages visited;
- referring website;
- approximate geographical information; and
- date and time of access.
Some of this information may be generated automatically by the website hosting provider for security, technical administration and server logging.
Where website analytics are used, they may also provide aggregated information about how visitors use the site.
I do not intend to use this information to identify individual visitors unless reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, or investigation of misuse.
3. Cookies
This website may use cookies or similar technologies.
Some cookies are strictly necessary for the website to function properly and may be used without consent.
Other cookies, including certain analytics, embedded-media, or third-party cookies, should be activated only where appropriate consent has been obtained.
Where non-essential cookies are used, visitors will be provided with an appropriate mechanism to accept or reject them.
You can also control or delete cookies through your browser settings.
4. Analytics
The website may use a privacy-conscious analytics service to understand general patterns of site usage, such as:
- which pages are most frequently visited;
- how visitors arrive at the site;
- general device or browser information; and
- overall visitor numbers.
Analytics are used to improve the usefulness and accessibility of the website, not to build personal profiles of individual visitors.
If an analytics service requiring cookies or other non-essential tracking is used, it will be subject to the appropriate consent mechanism.
5. External links
This website contains links to external platforms and organisations, including services such as:
- Google Scholar;

I am not responsible for the privacy policies, content or data practices of third-party websites.
6. Embedded content
Some pages may contain embedded material such as videos, documents, social-media posts or other content hosted by third-party services.
Embedded content may behave in the same way as if you had visited the third-party website directly. Such services may collect technical information, use cookies, or record interactions with the embedded material.
Where appropriate, non-essential third-party content may be prevented from loading until the visitor has provided consent.
7. Why personal information is processed
Personal information may be processed where necessary:
- to respond to enquiries you send to me;
- to operate, maintain and secure the website;
- to understand and improve the website;
- to prevent spam, abuse or malicious activity; or
- where I am required to comply with a legal obligation.
Depending on the circumstances, the lawful basis under UK data-protection law may include legitimate interests, consent, or legal obligation.
Where processing depends upon consent, you may withdraw that consent.
8. How long information is kept
Personal information will not be kept for longer than reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.
Routine enquiries may be retained for a reasonable period where continuing correspondence or future reference is appropriate and may subsequently be deleted.
Technical and security logs may be retained by the hosting provider for periods determined by its security and operational requirements.
9. Sharing of information
I do not sell personal information.
Information may be processed by service providers necessary to operate the website, such as:
- the website-hosting provider;
- email providers;
- website security or anti-spam services;
- analytics providers, where used; and
- other technical service providers required for normal site operation.
Information may also be disclosed where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect the security or legal rights of the website or others.
10. International data transfers
Some third-party services linked to or used by the website may process data outside the United Kingdom.
Where personal data is transferred internationally through services under my control, I use appropriate safeguards where required by applicable data-protection law.
Third-party websites that you visit independently are governed by their own privacy policies.
11. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the website and information submitted through it.
However, no internet transmission or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Please avoid sending highly sensitive personal information through ordinary website forms or email unless necessary.
